15 Magical Winter Family Traditions to Make Memories

Choose any winter tradition you like from our list, and then let’s get started!

Winters are fun with everything beautifully white all around us. However, when the snow continues for longer, people can suffer from Seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This is primarily associated with the onset of winters, with people’s energy being sacked up and their motivation levels below negative, just like the weather outside. While lying in front of the fireplace wrapped up in your cozy blankets seems like a great idea, it can damage your physical and mental health – being cocooned inside for extended periods with no activity.
To break this low energy and sadness cycle, we’ve made a list of winter traditions you need to follow to break the web of laziness! Following even one or two out of the list will surely help you have a great time with friends and family, reenergize you physically and mentally, and give you the boost you need this season to be active and mindful.

1. Make Coffee

Winters call for all things hot! What’s better than having a hot and steaming cup of coffee? Whether it’s getting up to make a coffee for yourself, making it for family, or inviting friends for a catch-up session with coffee, it’s bound to make you feel all warmed up! Add in some whipped cream and cocoa for some hot chocolate for the little ones or some high-quality coffee beans to have that stimulating effect of coffee to calm you down! You can even try new types of coffee, call over your friends, and have some chit-chat along with trying out dalgona coffee, cappuccino, espresso, or ristretto.

2. Build a Snowman

This is another winter tradition you can start now with family. This is bound to be fun and super enjoyable for everyone. Just make sure to get your best snow gloves out. Cover up in the best possible way and layer up a little extra! Then go out with your kids to make a snowman. (Do you want to build a snowman? from Frozen plays in the background!) You can also have this yearly activity with your friends. Don’t forget to shop for some cool accessories for your snowman!

3. Bake Holiday Treats

Winters call for some baked treats straight out of the oven! Whether it’s cookies, gingerbread, or scones, make it a point to bake one thing with family every winter. The process and result are both going to be enjoyable.

Most importantly, it will fulfill your hunger too! (Which is the next level in winter, isn’t it?) All the mommas out there give the kids the duty to clean up afterward so you can enjoy your baked holiday treat with a cup of coffee!

4. Have a Snowball Fight

While building a snowman is a great family tradition, another winter tradition can be organizing a snowball fight. Plan a spot where you can play freely with your friends and family, sufficient snow and space to dodge the snowball or toss it. Run, scream and laugh before you get hit by the snowball and experience that adrenaline rush that will give you tingles all over your body!

5. Wear Matching Family Pajamas

This is another winter tradition that you can have. Shop your favorite designed PJs or loungewear and take cute snaps together! You can also make a shopping trip! Everything is good about this tradition – Matching PJs, shopping, and pictures!

6. Watch a Movie Marathon

While we’re sure you’ve done a movie marathon alone plenty of times, you can make it a winter tradition with your friends and family too! Put on your favorite seasonal movies such as Christmas or thanksgiving inspired ones and just lay down with some popcorn and nachos. Enjoy it with your friends and family. Netflix also allows you to join your friends virtually in a movie marathon by calling it a Netflix party. Make it your winter tradition.

7. Plan a Vacation

Instead of just mulling over the sadness of the winter, you can plan your next summer travel destination. Take out your travel planners, decide your budget and book your flights and hotel rooms. The earlier you book, the more discounts you can avail yourself of.

Moreover, doing this in winter will give you ample time to think, plan and execute a great vacation in summer.

8. Volunteer or Donate

Another winter tradition can be volunteering. This is bound to strengthen your spirits and make you more empathetic. Go through your wardrobe, take out all the stuff you’ve been hoarding, and it could help someone else. Donate generously whatever you can, and you will see the benefits of it in the long run in the form of God’s blessings.

9. Family soup time

Another cute winter tradition you can follow with your family is having soup for supper or dinner! Include your friends and family in the process of making it as well. Assign someone with the vegetable chopping, while some can bake the bread croutons. In the end, everyone gets to have the warm soup and warmth one can enjoy only with friends and family.

10. Learn new skill

One winter tradition can be your promise to try and learn something new. It can be anything you like, from knitting and crocheting to baking, painting, etc. Whatever you’re interested in. Just order the supplies that you require and get right into it. You’ll learn the skill, and what a eureka, if you master it in that winter too!

11. Skiing

Going on skiing can be a tremendous physical activity during winter. This recreational activity is enjoyable if you master the art of skiing. We are sure you can rock it with a bit of practice. Once you learn it, you’ll wait for winter every year, as hitting the slopes will be your fun family tradition!

12. Reading

This one is definitely for all the bookworms out there who are snuggling up in front of the fireplace but along with their favorite book. Add a cup of hot chocolate to the scenario, and that’s perfect! What else do you need in the winter? Try this winter tradition, and you will gain some knowledge and enjoy this reading session.

13. Exercise (Yoga)

While winters can turn you lazy, please don’t succumb to them! Take control of your lifestyle and fitness. Take out some time to exercise. It can be anything you like – from yoga and running to going to the gym; make sure to be active and in the form. Keep that blood warm in winter to boost your immunity.

Put your favorite songs on the stereo and dance the way you like! Whether freestyle or learning new dance forms from youtube, get up and dance. This is great for your physical health and will vanish your laziness in seconds. So grab your partner’s hand and dance away.

15. Coloring (Arts and crafts)

This is another fun tradition you can do. Give your kids a coloring book or plain sheets to showcase their creativity. You can also get your adult coloring books and join them in fun using their colors, crayons, and paints. Arts bring out happiness in one’s soul. Don’t forget to bring out yours!

All these fun winter traditions are great if you can follow them. Make loads of memories and capture them too. Cherish your time with friends and family and make the most of it.
